My Friend David Talked Some Sense Into Me

My friend David is a die-hard Republican. He has been quite distressed about my public declaration that I intend to vote for Barack Obama in November. After trying many different methods to make me “see the light”, he took the time today to write out an email, appealing to pure logic and reason.

His email was entitled:

A Logical Analysis

Here is what he wrote:

Okay, Donny, let’s work this out logically without a lot of emotion.

If you vote for Obama….

You get this…..

But if you vote for McCain….

You get this…

I don’t know about you, but looking at this in a logical manner, McCain appears to be the better candidate.

ANY QUESTIONS?

Well, now that it’s been put to me that way, how do I argue with his logic?

    Honestly,

I am offended at the representation of Sarah Palin in this email and ultimately your post.

The very thing we want and serve God with all of our hearts to make a difference in: exploiting women and their bodies you have just supported in my opinion.

I am discouraged that this was your only reason for changing your mind.

I am on the fence on this election and I like the humor, I mean you have to say she is pretty good looking, vs the pant suit queen Hillary. People need to just relax about the whole thing. I think it is great you address this issue….it is the talk of my office is, Would you rather BINDEN or PALIN???

    The whole
OBAMA BIDEN is a little to close to
OSAMA BIN LANDEN for me, LOL and I am not sure we are ready for a guy with the middle name Hussain…but I am learning to deal with all of my “pre” judgements and just let the race continue. I personally don’t like either, but Politics itself is disgusting humor…

    I say lighten up :)

It’s not the vote I was worried about it was the humor.

In addition to my feelings about this (what I consider to be) sexist post, unfortunately in a weak moment that picture could take a man out who is struggling for freedom of sex/porn addiction. Now… is that your fault? –NO. Could they find stuff far worse? –YES
But the point is people consider you “safe” now and in my opinion THAT is the problem… men who would not think they would have to be “guarded” at donnysramblings.com could be very easily taken off guard by this post.

Am I being legalistic? – Perhaps to someone who doesn’t hold the same heart that I do on this matter. So be it. I’m not the be all end all- these are just my thoughts and I wear them like my heart- on my sleeve.

I love you- you know I do- I just disagree with this.

    MT,

We at X3 church are still friends and supporters of Heather Veitch and her ministry, right? Perhaps we will have to reconsider?

There are lots of things that can potentially cause men to allow their minds to go down the wrong path. I know one man who told me that even driving by a field of cotton used to do it for him, as he would imagine the women’s undergarments that cotton might eventually become.

I respect your opinions, but disagree.

Humor, Donny? Yes, it’s sort of funny, but I sure can see where MT has a point. I was feeling “National Inquirer” over some of your posts recently, now we come to kiddie playboy stuff? Probably photoshop more likely.

Of course, this blog is open to the entire universe, but I wonder if you would share it with your seminary buddies…..??

And anon, you expect MT to go around covering her head with a bag? I thought her picture was very nice indeed.

    Jean,

I’ve been in churches where women are dressed the same as Sara Palin in that photo. A bigger deal is being made of this than it actually is.

As for seminary buddies… this, as you said, is an open blog. All of them know the URL. You’ll notice the post isn’t password protected.

    oh, dude.

i’m gonna try not to make a big deal out of this, but it’s also a women’s issue..I mean, it IS a symptom of our patriarchal society to find a way to degrade powerful women by stripping us of our clothes, implying that our value can always be reduced to the measurement of our body parts. It’s a constant, irritating jab in the ribs of women. It’s old. And I think we should rise about that. If you have time, read the blog I posted on Myspace recently about the crazy pageant for nuns. It’s titled :UNbelievable”. This reminded me of that :)

Also, let’s remember that she owns a rifle. Don’t mess with a women who owns a rifle. ;)

if Obama is such an agent of change, why did he tap Joe Biden to be his running mate? the man has been a Washington DC insider for almost as long as you have been born.

Why does our society put the weight of a man’s lust problems on how a woman may dress. That in itself is sexist. There is something called admiration of the human body that has nothing to do with sex. I am disgusted at the “church” in general for promoting the idea that men must lust if they see anything other that a woman in a prairie dress. this post is plain humor. Not even close to bad humor. Yes it glorifies God in its humor. Pull the stick out of the ASS people;)

    Dalen,

I completely agree that men are responsible for their own actions and the way that they handle their lust. I also think it’s sexist to (1) put the blame on women for making men go “bad” and (2) expect less than full responsibility from men for the way they handle their lust, or any other emotion for that matter. I’ll never change the way I dress to help anyone else deal with their issues.

However, it saddens me–but doesn’t surprise me–that anyone would think a leather mini skirt, exposed bust line, and stilleto heels is the best way to flatter a woman’s body. That may be the world’s standard of “beauty” in a woman, but that doesn’t mean we should blindingly accept it as appropriate. If Christians can’t rise above that skewed image of women in society, who will? Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying women should stick to wearing long dresses and high collars in public. But, c’mon, if your little sister or beautiful mom left the house in the miniskirt outfit, you’d feel a bit uncomfortable.
    There’s a reason why.

Let me clarify. That particular outfit in my opinion is white trash. Not even close to sexy. More like, “let’s go out and work the corner”. I was generalizing about the problem’s Christians have with skin. I as not appreciating biker outfit chic. Also for those not aware, Palin’s head is photoshoped in there.
